The small aliens in the final scenes were played by fifty local six-year-old girl dancers in Mobile, Alabama. That decision was requested by Spielberg because he felt "girls move more gracefully than boys".

The small aliens were created by my father, Tom Burman. He used me as his model to sculpt the head and hands on. It was the first time I got paid by a production company. I was
10 years old and received $75 for sitting to have my hands and head cast. The girls who actually
wore the alien masks were 9 and 10 years old,
not 6.
